After reading The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and learning about different types of bridges, the students were challenged to build a bridge of their own using any materials in the classroom. We had discussed the forces that make bridges work (pushes and pulls), and had looked at photos of real bridges and the supports they use, in order to help the kids think about their design. They could choose whether they wanted to work alone, or in groups, and had to write up a plan for their design, materials, etc. first. I was only there to give questioning feedback. The students truly had to think and plan it out on their own. The bridges were all able to withstand me pushing on them with my hands! Future engineers in the making!
